Research Fellowships | Past SIS Junior Faculty Fellowship Award Recipients
For Junior Faculty
Faculty members in the rank of Assistant Professor or Instructor for no more than three years in a surgical discipline are eligible to apply for the SIS Junior Faculty Fellowship Award. The amount of this award is $50,000/year.
The total amount of other extramural grants-in-aid supporting the Junior Faculty awardee’s research cannot exceed $50,000 (US). There are no specific restrictions on the amount of intramural (departmental/institutional) support. If there are any questions regarding these restrictions, the applicant or their sponsor should call or email Evan Nadler, MD, Chair of the SIS Fellowship Committee (address below).
The applicant and the sponsor must be SIS members at the time of the award announcement. The support will be given as a gift to the institution accepting responsibility for the research environment of the awardees. These awards must be expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research. The award shall be used only for salary support or direct cost expenditures of the funded research project conducted by the SIS junior faculty member. No part of the award may be used for indirect costs. Funding will begin July 1, 2011. Junior Faculty Fellowship Awardees should devote at least 75% effort on the proposed research during the Fellowship period.
Renewal for second year of funding is competitive and is limited to 2 years total.
For All Fellowship Award Applicants
Applicants will be notified 4 weeks prior at the annual meeting of the Surgical Infection Society in Palm Beach (May 11-14, 2011). The SIS Fellowship Committee will review the applications and forward recommendations to the Surgical Infection Society Foundation who will make the final decision regarding the awards. Fellowship recipients are expected to submit and present an abstract and attend the SIS annual meeting in 2012.
Letters of support from the endorsers, research sponsor, and department Chairperson must be included with the application. These letters should describe the facilities available for the applicant, sources of salary support, and a guarantee of protected time. The letters should summarize the significance of this project and the applicant’s qualifications. The letter from the departmental Chairperson must indicate that no Fellowship funds will be used for overhead and that all monies provided are specifically for the Awardee’s salary and direct research costs. Absence of this letter will exclude consideration of the application.
SIS Fellowship application forms are available online. These forms must be downloaded from the website, completed on your computer, and sent via e-mail to Dr. Nadler. The instructions regarding completion of the SIS Fellowship forms must be followed.
