Research Fellowships | Past Fellowship Award Recipients

For Residents or Fellows
Residents or fellows who have completed at least two years of post-graduate training in a surgical discipline are eligible to apply for the SIS Resident Fellowship. The purpose of this fellowship is to provide the opportunity for a resident or fellow to spend one year in full-time research in the laboratory of a member of the Surgical Infection Society. The amount of this award is $50,000/year. Surgical Infection Society Fellowships are intended to be the primary source of extramural support for the applicant’s research project. Thus, the total amount of other extramural grants-in-aid supporting the Fellow’s research cannot exceed $25,000. If there are any questions regarding these restrictions, the applicant or their sponsor should call or email Evan P. Nadler, MD, Chair of the SIS Fellowship Committee (address below). Resident Fellowship awardees should not have any regularly assigned clinical duties during the Fellowship period.

For All Fellowship Award Applicants
Applicants will be notified 4 weeks prior at the annual meeting of the Surgical Infection Society in Dallas, Texas (April 18-21, 2012). The SIS Fellowship Committee will review the applications and forward recommendations to the Surgical Infection Society Foundation who will make the final decision regarding the awards. Fellowship recipients are expected to submit and present an abstract and attend the SIS annual meeting in 2012.

Letters of support from the endorsers, research sponsor, and department Chairperson must be included with the application. These letters should describe the facilities available for the applicant, sources of salary support, and a guarantee of protected time. The letters should summarize the significance of this project and the applicant’s qualifications. The letter from the departmental Chairperson must indicate that no Fellowship funds will be used for overhead and that all monies provided are specifically for the Awardee’s salary and direct research costs. Absence of this letter will exclude consideration of the application.

SIS Fellowship application forms are available online. These forms must be downloaded from the website, completed on your computer, and sent via e-mail to Dr. Nadler. The instructions regarding completion of the SIS Fellowship forms must be followed.
