How did you hear about the SIS fellowship?
How did you get involved in surgical infections research?
My exposure to surgical critical care and taking care of ICU patients as a surgical resident sparked my interest in surgical infections research. I had worked with Dr. Rosengart clinically on the Trauma service and actively sought him out as a potential research mentor because of his interest in immunity and sepsis, specifically as it relates to calcium signaling. Together we formulated a project that combined our common interests in surgical critical care.
Can you describe how the fellowship has benefitted your education as a surgical resident?
The fellowship provided me with the funding necessary to freely pursue my basic science research, as well as my interests in clinical and translational research. In addition to benchwork, I am also taking formal coursework in statistics and epidemiology through the University of Pittsburgh with the goal of obtaining a Masters Degree in clinical research. My laboratory experience has greatly enhanced my knowledge base and appreciation for the surgical sciences.
What would you tell medical students who are interested in surgery?
Surgery is a challenging and demanding career choice, but is one that I have found equally rewarding and fulfilling in every regard. I knew instantly after my first experience in the operating room that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and I have always been drawn to academic surgery because of the unique ability to combine science with patient care.
What suggestions would you give to residents who would like to pursue research projects?
Finding a good mentor is key. I have received exceptional guidance and support from my research mentor, Dr. Rosengart. He is truly interested in my personal development and has really encouraged me to pursue things that I am passionate about and that will benefit my future career.
