  • What a Year This Has Been!

    Gregory J. Beilman, MD

To my Surgical Infection Society friends and family:

What a year this has been! COVID-19, politics, social unrest. In the midst of all of this, missing a meeting seems like small potatoes. However, as one of our past presidents said during a recent Zoom call: “If you don’t meet, you die.” While this has been true in the past, I am not sure that it is the complete picture anymore. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed our hospitals, I want to shout out to all of you who by email, phone calls, and participation in Zoom have continued the interactions that bring us together and hold us together.

At the end of the day, we are in this together to provide better care for our patients thru a better understanding of the science of surgical infections. Certainly a Global pandemic is an appropriate topic of discussion for us, even as surgeons. I want to thank all of you who have actively participated in our discussions of the fall to better understand the role of our Society in the future. I was gratified at the level of participation of both established members, and more importantly of new and younger members.

We are in the midst of planning for next year. As many of us have said repeatedly, this is a fluid situation! Our hope is to have continued interactions, both using supporting technology, and as this pandemic becomes history, in person. As you are available from your patient care duties, I would encourage you to get involved, by writing, by Zoom, in our webinars, and in meetings. I encourage you to submit abstracts to our meeting, and manuscripts to Surgical Infections. I look forward to sharing a libation with you all when next we come together. To a better 2021!

    Yours respectfully,

    Greg
