Please plan on joining us May 2 - 5, 2017 in exciting St. Louis, Missouri for the 37th Annual meeting of the Surgical Infection Society
The SIS is dedicated to educating members and providing educational opportunities to future researchers and practitioners.
As a surgical trainee, I recognized the suffering my patients endured as a result of surgical infections. I decided immediately that understanding and preventing infections would be part of my learning and of my practice. My background in biology allowed me to understand that the organism causing the infection is not the only culprit. Decreasing infections will necessarily involve the discovery of an amalgamation of the patient-specific risk factors, including microbiomes and genetic factors, as well as the occasionally subtle effects of different surgeon and health care system practices. The science of infections thus integrates multiple disciplines and I find that the Surgical Infection Society provides the perfect venue where basic, clinical, and translational scientists of all disciplines could all meet and communicate. I feel that this interplay is critical for scientific advancement in the complex field of surgical infections and I consider myself fortunate to have been given the opportunity to learn from and to contribute to this process.
When I met Drs. Bochicchio and Mazuski at Washington University in St. Louis, I recognized them as enthusiastic and experienced mentors whom I aspire to emulate. Thus I learned about the Surgical Infection Society and its reputation within the academic community as well as its influence in developing the guidelines of care. As part of this Society, I seek to meet intelligent and engaging individuals and to acquire mentors who will inspire my academic work. Further, I intend to share the knowledge of Surgical Infections that I acquire as part of the Society, with my colleagues, with medical students, and when needed, with patients and the community.
